AI could bring Africa nearly 400 billion dollars
Meeting in Geneva on 1–2 October, experts estimated that artificial intelligence could add about 397 billion dollars to Africa's GDP, provided the continent captures 2.5% of the global market. Today Africa holds less than 1% of the world's data centres. Participants urged African states to pool resources, protect their data and focus first on agriculture, health, education and finance. For shopkeepers and entrepreneurs the message is clear: get trained now to ride this wave.
According to Ndiaye Dia, founder of Senegal's Institut des algorithmes, Africa mostly serves as a testing ground, a data source and a market for AI, without influencing how these tools are designed. He calls for going beyond simple uses (writing a message, making an image) towards transformative ones: forecasting a shop's demand, detecting fraud, processing administrative files, giving farming or medical advice in local languages. Key idea: AI is not a gadget, it is a tool to run a whole business.
